Gen Z Dictionary
A
- A force: Unnecessarily excessive effort.
B
- Basic: Refers to someone who is unoriginal and only follows mainstream trends.
- Bet: An affirmative response meaning "definitely," "absolutely," etc. E.g.,"When this quarantine is over, wanna meet up at the mall?" "Bet!"
- Big Yikes: Is a more intense version of the word "yikes." It refers to something that is so very embarrassing that another, much larger "yikes" is needed.
- Bops: A modern enjoyable song.
- Bouta: I am about to...
- Bruh: Gender-neutral term for a friend; can be used in disgust or excitement.
C
- Can't even: An expression that denotes various emotional responses when a person can not comprehend what was said or what is happening. Used on blogging sites like Tumblr.
- Cap/No Cap: Cap means you are lying (like you are hiding beneath your cap/hat). No cap means you're not lying. E.g., I did my homework all by myself, no cap!
- Catch these hands: To get punched and/or knocked out.
- Chill: The new way of saying cool. He is not uptight; he is pretty chill.
- Clap back: Respond to an insult with an equal or greater insult.
- Crackie: Someone who juuls or smokes.
- Cringy: Something that makes one cringe.
D
- Deadass: I am serious. Are you serious. May be used as a question or statement of fact
- Do not do me dirty: Do not cross me.
- Drip: An adjective used to describe someone wearing expensive items, like diamond jewelry, or to describe a nice outfit, in general.
E
- Extra: Over the top or excessive. Someone who is exhibiting dramatic behavior.
F
- Facts: Used in response to a point well made.
i.e. Person 1: This school is wack! Person 2: Facts.
- Fake: The ultimate insult; an adjective describing someone who is disingenuous, lies a lot, talks behind people's backs, and pretends to be your friend but secretly does not like you.
- Finesse: To trick someone into giving you something.
- Fam: Used to describe those you consider close friends.
- Finsta: Short for fake Instagram. A second Instagram account that someone has, typically used for memes, inside jokes, etc., only for the eyes of close friends.
- Fire: Describes something that is really good or cool.
- Flex: To show off possessions. Knowledge, or other intangibles, can also be flexed.
G
- Glow-Up: A transformation of one's appearance, usually from unattractive to very attractive.
- Go Off: Can be used to encourage a choice, or to support a rant or ridiculous behavior that's already occurred, usually meant humorously.
- Goals: A term used to describe what someone wants in their life
i.e. Couple goals or Squad goals.
- Guap: Pronounced gwop, guap means lots and lots of money. Seriously. A ridiculous amount of money.
- Gucci: Comes from the high-end fashion brand. Another way to say good, chill,or awesome.
H
- HMU: An acronym for hit me up, which could refer to hanging out, texting, or talking on the phone.
- High-Key: Used to describe ones thoughts, desires, or feelings in a proclaiming, exclamatory manner. The opposite of low-key.
- Hype: To promote or publicize a product or idea intensively, often exaggerating its benefits.
- Hypebeast: Is a kid that collect clothing, shoes, and accessories for the sole purpose of impressing others. Although the individual may not have a dime to their name they like to front like they are making far more then everybody else.
I
- Iconic: Something that is highly influential or unique, like works of art, artists, performers, etc.
K
- k: Okay, used over text when typically mad.
L
- Leaving Someone on Read: A cold shoulder. Refers to opening a message and not responding, while the sender can see that you opened it.
- Let's Get This Bread: A pep talk expression similar to let's do this or we got this.
- Lit: When something is amazing or popping.
- Low-Key: Used to describe one's thoughts, desires, or feelings in a subtle way.
M
- Me: Another way of saying Me too; I can relate to that.
- Mood: Used in lieu of same here; relatable; summing up ones life.
N
- No Cap: Seriously/ No lie.
- No U: A deflection; basically the modern version of I know you are, but what am I?
M
- OK Boomer: A bit controversial with the elder generations, this one is Generation Z's dismissive response to suggestions from anybody older./
- On Fleek: Describes perfection.
i.e. Her eyebrows are on fleek.
- Oof: The same as yikes. When you does not really care but should at least say something.
- OTP: Stands for One True Pairing; your favorite ship.
P
- Periodt: A word used at the end of a sentence, meant to add emphasis to a point that has been made. It is often regarded as a more extreme or intense version of "period." It is also often preceded by the words "and that's on" to add further emphasis.
- Pull Up: It means to hang out, as if you're "pulling up" in front of their house.
i.e. "Anybody want to pull up?"
Q
- Queen: A beautiful girl, who doesn't take disrespect from any body. She's smart and does what she wants when she wants.
R
- Real One: Can be any person in your life who is always themselves and keeps it 100 at all times with you and you can trust.
S
- Salty: Being upset over something little or inconvenient.
- Same: Short for "same here."
- Secure the bag: Getting money, but it can refer to accomplishing goals in general.
- Ship: When a third person wants two other people to be in a relationship, or supports an existing relationship.
- Shook or Shooketh: Another way to say you're shocked or surprised.
- Simp: Used to describe people (generally those who identify as male) who are willing to do anything to get somebody to fall in love with them.
- Sksksksksksksks: Originating in text-speak, this is the new Gen Z sign of laughter in some circles (mostly VSCO girls); the new "hahahaha."
- Slaps: Positive term for anything cool, but most frequently used to describe a good song: "That song really slaps."
- Slay: To impress or amuse.
- Slide Into Their DMs: A phrase used to signify that one wants to send a flirtatious message over social media.
- Snacc: An attractive person; someone that looks so good that you want to eat them for a snack.
- Snatched: When someone is wearing something that is very fashionable, or has a look that looks really good.
- Squad: One's group of friends.
- Stan A "stalker fan." You're not just a fan; you're a huge fan on the verge of stalking (but not in a creepy way).
- Sus: Short for suspicious.
T
- Take the L: Willingly make a sacrifice.
- TBH: Stands for to be honest.
- Tea: The scoop or gossip. "Spill the tea."
- Thicc: Pleasantly plump; curvy in the right places especially the butt or thighs.
- Thirsty: Describes someone who is desperate for attention from a romantic interest.
- Triggered: Upset, sad, or disgusted; has evolved from its original definition of being reminded of a negative situation.
V
- Vibe/Vibes: The vibe describes the overall mood of the situation; the "aura."
- Vibe Check: A quick check of the vibes and attitudes in any situation. Is a person chill? Is there a problem here? Are they going to kill the mood? You either pass or you fail the vibe check; there's no in between.
- Vibin': A verb that has a lot to do with enjoying music together
- VSCO Girl: A really basic white girl who usually has a hydro flask and a metal straw; uses terms like "sksksks" and "And I oop;" wears shell necklaces, scrunchies, oversized t-shirts, short shorts, and Birkenstocks; and talks a lot about saving the turtles. They're named after a picture editing app called VSCO.
W
- Wack: Negative term meaning "that sucks."
- Wig Snatched: A term for an impressive or unimpressive act or appearance.
Y
- Yeet: An exclamation that could be used in various situations as a way to say yes, to express excitement, to issue a battle cry, etc. depending on context. Yeet is also used to accompany a throw.
