Why it Works
- Sleeping can be difficult for some and sometimes a manipulated enviroment is the only way for someone to fall alseep. One thing we can do is manipulate our enviroment. Many people have opted to use storm sounds as an effective way to fall alseep. But why?
- Typically when trapped in a storm, a sense of anxiety is expected, the first thing people try to do is run home, trying not to get caught in the rain. So why is it that when we are cozy in bed we find refuge in these noises that typically scare us? The phenomon has been researched and inspected by scientists.
- Many studies have conluded that an increased secretion of melatonin occurs when listening to these noises. Melatonin is the sleep hormone, therefore, the sound of storms can directly impact ones sleepiness.
- Research also states that Human activities are restricted during periods of rain and storm, so one may find refuge in the sounds of rain sputtering or waves crashing. Rainy days can typically be associated with spending the day inside, playing cards or watching a movie; all leisurely activites that are very relaxing. The things that we associate with rain are also associated with fatigue, this is another way that humans are able to find comfort in the sound of rain.
- The last scientific explanation for the reasoning behind the phenomeon is that the sound of a storm is typically non threatening. Loud noises such as a door slamming during our sleep tend to wake us up, because our brain classifys these noises as threatening. When we hear the repetitive and soothing sound of a wave or the endless rain drops falling in a pattern, we are not threatened, therefore these noises to not wake us up.
