the sub-pixel - part 1: introduction, & taking a closer look
For multiple reasons, the clarity and amount of details seen in an image may need to be modified. Given a low resolution image or camera, by manipulating its sub-pixel levels, we get an improved overall image. This is because sub-pixels exist digitally, in-between and below two pixels, existing on the surface-level. Through advanced photo and video editing softwares, you can lower the calculation of your pixels (measured in PPI), and highten the levels of sub-pixel resolution instead.

Like in images, text and fonts often have their sub-pixel resolutions edited as well. This occurs frequently for designers working on signs, advertisements, logos, etc. Usually, when referring to sub-pixel resolution in regards to text, professionals will call it "font antialiasing."
