How to Style Jacobean Embrodiery in the 21st Century

Jacobean Embriodery Then and Now

Jacobean embroidery is a style of embroidery design, rather than an embroidery technique. It refers to a kind of mood board wherein highly stylized mythical creatures, plants, and maidens reign supreme. The name “Jacobean” comes from James I of England, under whose reign this style of décor became popular. This decor was not accessible to all, “in trying to think of a contemporary form that is comparably labor intensive, animation came to mind,” explained specialist Susan Brown in a 2012 interview with Cooper Hewitt. Because of the craftsmanship required to produce such work, Jacobean still remains primarily within the upper class. Today, it is undeniable that designers like Gucci’s Alessandro Michele and Dior’s Maria Grazia Chiuri are inspired by Jacobean embroidery.
